Perceiving Roughness via a Rigid Probe: Psychophysical Effects of Exploration Speed and Mode of Touch
نویسندگان
چکیده
Two experiments investigated the psychophysical consequences for roughness perception of altering the speed of motion with which real textured surfaces are explored using a rigid probe. Two speed ranges were used: a 10-fold change (Experiment 1) and a 4-fold change (Experiment 2). Relative motion was altered both by moving the probe actively over a stationary surface (active mode) and by moving the surfaces under the stationary probe (passive mode). Substantial effects of speed were obtained relative to previous studies. The results are examined both in terms of the complex effects of speed on the psychophysical roughness functions and in terms of an increase in the size of the maximum speed effect as the range of speeds explored was reduced. We also consider how best to minimize potentially negative effects of speed on the haptic exploration of simulated textures. Two operatortraining procedures are proposed to achieve effective haptic exploration strategies.

Tactile perception of nonpainful unpleasantness in relation to perceived roughness: effects of inter-element spacing and speed of relative motion of rigid 2-D raised-dot patterns at two body loci.
Rigid surfaces consisting of spatially jittered 2-D raised-dot patterns with different inter-element spacings were moved back and forth across the skin at three different speeds (10-fold range). Within each psychophysical experiment, participants numerically estimated the perceived magnitude of either unpleasantness (nonpainful) or roughness of 2-D raised-dot surfaces applied to two stationary ...
متن کاملSomatosensory coding of roughness: the effect of texture adaptation in direct and indirect touch.
To examine somatosensory mechanisms contributing to the perception of roughness, subjects examined surfaces with rigorously specified spatial textures under conditions of direct moving contact between the fingertip and the surface (direct touch) and contact through a rigid probe (indirect touch). Subjects were trained to scan the surfaces along a consistent path and with a speed of 2.7 cm/s. Wi...
متن کاملExperimental Investigation of the Surface Roughness in Grinding of BK7 Optical Glass in Brittle Mode
Surface roughness is a significant parameter which determines the efficiency of optical components. Surface damages induced by grinding strongly influence the mechanical strength and optical quality of optical glasses. It is meaningful to rapid evaluate the surface roughness through the measurement of different grinding parameters. In this study, a cup diamond wheel (D64) is used in grinding pr...
متن کاملHaptic roughness perception of linear gratings via bare finger or rigid probe.
The magnitude of perceived roughness was haptically estimated as subjects freely explored linear gratings with either the bare finger or a rigid stylus-shaped probe. A considerably expanded range of ridge and groove width was investigated, relative to the extant literature. The four experiments collectively indicate that, for both finger and probe-end effectors, the variance in the estimates of...
متن کاملSelective effects of auditory stimuli on tactile roughness perception.
We report two psychophysical experiments designed to investigate the effects of non touch-produced sounds on the tactile perception of roughness and length. Previous studies have demonstrated that the tactile roughness perception of object surfaces is modified by sounds elicited by rubbing the surfaces. In this study, we examined the crossmodal effects of non touch-produced sounds such as white...
